Growing up in Saginaw Michigan, the last place that John thought he would end up playing hockey, living his life, and teaching the game to others would be in beautiful sunny Australia. This is where he has landed and the place that he calls home today.
I myself had the opportunity to go ‘down under’ and play some hockey myself. When I noticed John pop up online I was very intrigued to learn more about him and what it has been like trying to grow the game of ‘Ice hockey’ in a country that’s more known for Australian rules football, rugby and cricket. From what I have seen first hand and from following John over on his Instagram page (@nsa_hockey), the game is catching on quickly and growing more and more every year. And lets face it, Aussie rules football and rugby are far from sports for the faint of heart. I’ve seen a few matches up close and they make hockey look like a game of badminton, so the sport of hockey should be a natural fit.
In this episode of the podcast, John and I discuss how he got into the game, what it was like growing up and playing hockey in Saginaw and what his journey looked like getting to where he is today. We also dive into the type of commitment it takes to chase down your hockey dreams, and what it is like dealing with some adversity along the way.
I really enjoyed this chat with John as you will be able to tell by the amount of laughs we shared. I look forward to talking with him again soon. He is a great man, a great coach and doing some great things to help grow the game we all know and love. It was a pleasure to share some of his story.
